How the ranking is calculated

Most feedback on photos is one person’s opinion, given quickly, and shaped by who you are and who you know. Fotovea works differently. Judges see two photos at a time and choose the one they think is better. Every photo is compared many times, against many different photos, and by many different judges.

The ranking is not a count of wins. The algorithm takes all of those comparisons together, including the ones that disagree with each other, and finds the ranking that best fits the whole set of opinions. Because every photo appears in many pairs, and the voting is spread across many judges, no single judge can decide where a photo ends up — and it makes no difference whose name is on it.

This is the part photographers tell us they did not expect. The photos you took a year ago were eliminated in the first round. Now your photos regularly reach the semifinals. That is not a feeling about your own work. It is a record of it.

You can start today without paying anything

You do not need to buy anything to take part. Judge other people’s photos, earn orbs for doing it, and spend those orbs entering contests. Many photographers never spend any money. Here is how the judging works.
